A few days ago, as I was preparing for travel, an unexpected opportunity arose to change my flight itinerary. This was a welcome change because of more convenient flight times and a layover city that allowed for a visit with family and friends.
As I pondered the blessings afforded by this sequence of events, I couldn’t help but wonder if there was a greater purpose associated with it.
Well, my answer came when I got to church on Sunday morning and listened to the pastor’s sermon. There couldn’t be a more relevant and timely message for my heart that corrected and challenged me. It brought clarity, direction, and help in areas of my life where I desperately needed it.
I left knowing that service, knowing, without a doubt, that I was helped in a divinely orchestrated way. That was such a comforting thought.
This experience taught me that we do well to have plans. However, we must allow for detours to our plans.
Detours, by definition, involve diverting from where we plan or expect to be going. But the irony is that when God is navigating us, any detour is precisely where we should be and part of His divine plan.
Proverbs 3:5-6 says, ‘Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.’
While it is important to have plans, we are not expected to figure out every aspect and detail of our lives. Furthermore, God’s direction will not always be aligned with our plans. Yet, we must follow and trust His leading, knowing that He makes no mistakes.
Along the path that appears to be a detour are some amazing, unforgettable experiences that would be a tragedy to miss. So, the next time life reroutes you away from your plan, don’t be afraid to detour!
